Overview of marine electric field sensors

Abstract

Marine electric field detection has unique advantages in underwater target location, seabed resources exploration and seabed tectonic and geological structure exploration, which is a hot technology in the field of electromagnetic field cognition for marine military research in recent years. This review starts from the sensing electrodes, the core component of ocean electric field exploration or underwater target detection, and summarizes the foreign research level about the two main types of ocean electric field sensing electrodes—Ag/AgCl and carbon fiber electrodes, followed by a detailed introduction of the research progress of domestic representative research units and universities in this area, including performance evaluation methods, possible sensing mechanisms and signal conditioning circuits of the electrodes. Finally, the key problems faced by existing ocean electric field sensors are reviewed, as well as possible suggestions on how to prepare high-precision and high-stability ocean sensors from various aspects such as precise adjustment of electrodes, mechanism model, circuit design, and algorithm compensation, and a unified evaluation standard is proposed to provide suggestions for domestic ocean electric field sensors to move from laboratory to practical use.
