Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein and Paraoxonase Levels in Matched Serum and Cerebrospinal Fluid from Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Preliminary Results
Journal Title: Nepal Journal of Neuroscience - Year 2005, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
The role of oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) and protective features of paraoxonase (PON1) in a variety of the central nervous system diseases have been extensively investigated; however, levels of molecules mentioned above in either serum or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) have not been studied. The levels of Ox-LDL and PON1 in both serum and CSF were measured within the first three days and on day seven of post-SAH in 10 consecutive patients and the results were compared to ten patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus without any other known central nervous system diseases. Statistically significant difference was noted in CSF levels of both Ox-LDL and PON1 between the patients and control. Increased levels of both Ox-LDL and PON1 measured during the acute stage of SAH might have a role in the development of vascular complications seen after SAH.

The Postnatal Subventricular Zone: A Source of New Cells in This Old Brain
Findings over the past decades demonstrating persistent neurogenesis in the adult brain have challenged the view of a fixed circuitry and raise hopes for self-renewal following brain injury. The subventricular zone (SVZ,...
Outcome Difference in Neurosurgical Patients Based on Timing of Tracheostomy and Ventilator Associated Pneumonia
