Pain As A Reason To Visit The Family Physician; A Study In Southern Israel

Journal Title: Journal of Anesthetic Research and Pain Medicine - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the incidence and characteristics of complaints relating to acute and chronic pain in patients who go to family doctors in the Negev and the doctor’s approach to them. The design was a cross-sectional study of visits with family doctors in primary care clinics. The study was approved by the Helsinki Committee of the Meir Medical Center (approval # 0031-15-com). The study included 325 patients, of whom 170 (52.3%) complained of pain. The mean age was 49.4±21.7. Most of the patients were women (57.5%). One hundred one of 187 women (54%) complained of pain compared to 69 of 138 men (50%) (P = 0.546). Younger patients suffered more from acute pain while older patients suffered mostly from chronic pain (P = 0.02). The most common pain site was the limbs (52.1%), followed by the back (17%). One hundred eleven patients (65.3%) received medication with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s), the most commonly prescribed. The vast majority of pain were nociceptive (96%), with only 3% neurogenic. Most patients were treated by their family doctor. Only 32.7% were referred to a specialist or to the emergency room. Only 2 (1.2%) were referred to a pain clinic. Pain is a common complaint and a major reason for visiting primary care doctors. Family doctors are the first to address pain complaints and treat them.
