Palmaris longus muscle variants: Well known, but what’s new?
Journal Title: International Journal of Anatomical Variations - Year 2019, Vol 12, Issue 1
Abstract
Classically, the palmaris longus muscle (PL) starts from the medial epicondyle of the humerus and from the adjacent intermuscular septa and deep fascia, then continues into a long tendon, which passes superficial to the flexor retinaculum and after crossing it, the tendon broadens out to become into a flat sheath which incorporated into the palmar aponeurosis. Finally, knowledge of the reported and the novel anatomical variants, as well as proposed novel classifications discovered in anatomical or surgical journals, such as the IJAV, is so important to successful knowledge and outcomes in the clinical practice.

Variations of circle of Willis in human cadavers
Aims and Objective: The blood supply of brain is of great importance because of the metabolic demands of the nervous tissue. A significant anastomosis, the Circle of Willis exists between the carotid and vertebral arteri...
Anatomical variation in the origin of superior thyroid artery
The Superior Thyroid Artery (STA) is the dominant arterial supply of the thyroid gland, larynx and the neck. Awareness of variations in STA is crucial for invasive operations in the neck region. We reported a case that S...
First report of a “latissimo-cleidocostal” muscle on the anterolateral thoracic wall
During routine cadaveric dissection of the thorax and upper limb in a clinical gross anatomy course, we identified an unusual, supernumerary muscle in the right torso of a 91 year-old, Caucasian male. This consisted of a...
Abnormal superior trunk formation of brachial plexus: a case report and review of literature
Brachial plexus is a complicated network of nerves formed by fusion and splitting. Variations in the brachial plexus occur at the level of roots, trunks, cords and branches emanating from these structures. We observed a...
Anatomical variations of muscles in the human body and their relevance for clinical practice
Anatomical variations of the muscles are a broad group that refers to multiple types of variations, the clinical significance of which can range from incidental findings during physical examinations or imaging studies to...
