Pandemic of vitamin D deficiency and its effect on human health
Journal Title: The Journal of Community Health Management - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
Vitamin-D is a group of fat- soluble seco-steroids responsible for increasing intestinal absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate and zinc. In addition to known effects on calcium homeostasis, vitamin D has a variety of functions including immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. Vitamin D is not strictly a vitamin, since it can be synthesized in the skin, and under most conditions that is the major source of the vitamin. Only when sunlight exposure is inadequate is a dietary source required.
