Parameter evaluation of the vocal acoustic and efficiency analysis in students with use of the new program DiagnoScope

Journal Title: Otolaryngologia Polska - Year 2011, Vol 65, Issue 3

Abstract

SUMMARY Introduction: The aim of this work was to evaluate parameters of the vocal acoustic and efficiency analysis in Physiotherapy students by using the new program called DiagnoScope Specjalista. Materia! and methods: The study covered a group of 55 students, including 22 men and 33 women, aged 20-35. On an initial interwiew the students underwent videolaryngoscopy and stroboscopy of the larynx, as well as the diagnostic vocal acoustic and efficiency analysis using DiagnoScope Specjalista program. The acoustic analysis included: an analysis of the prolonged sound a which was uttered twice during one expiration, a short-term analysis of 34 parameters such as: basic frequency — FO, AFO, Voiced, Simple Q, Jitter, RAP, Shimmer, APQ, F1, F2, F3, F4, U2H, NHR, Yg, and an efficiency analysis with parameters like phonation time, actual phonation time, coefficient of efficiency and mean vocal efficiency. Results: In women the own studies reported the mean value of FO amounting to 227Hz (212Hz as a standard value). In the young female students the voice samples presented lower parameters: shimmer and APQ (3.69 — standard 4.87, and 2.69 — standard 3.4, respectively), whereas Jitter was normal. In the young healthy students their acoustic and efficiency parameters of voice, those describing the amplitude of vibration, frequency or noise components in voice, were below the standards in DiagnoScope Specjalista program. Apart from an initial patient interwiew, video recording, the sound 'a' analysis, vocal efficiency analysis, phrase analysis and choral voice analysis, DiagnoScope Specjalista program allows the performance and evaluation of kimography. Conclusions: The objective method of the vocal acoustic and efficiency analysis by using DiagnoScope Specjalista program can become a valuable supplement of a complex examination of the vocal organ. Moreover, it can be found among the programs seeking the best measurement methodology, computer formulae and algorithms on the question whether the examined voice reveals any pathological signs or belongs to the category of normal records.
