Parents' sense of self-efficacy and children's academic performance

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 49, Issue 7

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between parents' sense of self-efficacy and their children's academic performance. The concept of parents' self-efficacy originates from A. Bandura's social cognitive theory of personality. The study covered 4931 parents of fourth graders at elementary schools who filled in a questionnaire developed based on A. Bandura's suggestions. Factor analysis resulted in two types of parents' sense of self-efficacy: an academic type and a non-academic type. School grades are connected with academic self-efficacy; a sense of academic self-efficacy is higher in mothers and it is stronger in regards to their daughters. Both school grades and a sense of academic self-efficacy are connected with parents' education level. The higher the education level is, the better academic performance and the stronger sense of self-efficacy.
