Parkinsonism After Carbonmonoxide Intoxication: Case Report
Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2005, Vol 22, Issue 3
Abstract
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas formed by incomplete combustion. The clinical presentation depends on the duration and intensity of exposure. Mild symptoms include headache and malaise, nausea and vomiting. More severe intoxication is characterized by overt neurological features. The 38-years-old male patient is brought to the emergency service of our hospital by ambulance since he was found as unconsciousness (Glasgow Coma Score: E1M4V1). It was learnt that there was a not-extinguished coal stove. In order to replace the deficit level of base, sodium bicarbonate treatment was given and metabolic acidosis was recovered. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed signal intensity in the basal ganglia, posterior limb of capsula interna and periventricular area. On the second day of the treatment, the patient recovered from consciousness and was extubed. Neurological examination of the patient revealed resting tremor, slowness of activities of daily living and spesking. By the means of the current laboratory and clinical findings, the patient’s status perceived as a result of carbon monooxide intoxication. As in this case, it is important to consider the parkinsonism features in all carbon monooxide intoxication cases.
