Past and Future of Minimally Invasive Surgery
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 1
Abstract
The turn of the 20th century signified milestone steps in implementation of videotechnology to the operating rooms. After initial difficulties with recognizing this new method, within few years since its introduction laparoscopic surgery became accepted as a gold standard for many procedures, done until recently in traditional “open” way only. With further development of new technology, surgeons began operations thru one small port, trying to use one instead of multiple access ports for laparoscopic surgeries. Surgical robots are being used for some selected procedures in many centers around the globe with hope of improving surgery outcomes. Other surgeons in collaboration with industry work intensively on natural orifice translumenal surgery (NOTES), trying to resolve technological challenges for operating intraabdominal organs accessing them via natural body openings. This dynamic development of surgical technology resulted from multidisciplinary collaboration of visionary surgeons, medical industry, patients and insurance companies interested in lowering cost of treatments and less invasive procedures for patients. Future might bring further development of these methods, utilization of virtual reality in surgical settings, further transfer of care from large hospitals to small surgery centers, leading to saves in healthcare resources. It is expected, that observed revolution in traditional surgery will lead to major changes in training both individual surgeons and entire surgery teams, needed to work collaboratively to benefit patients and healthcare systems.
