PATTERNS FOR SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF EARLY-STAGE ENTREPRENEURIAL ACTIVITY IN RUSSIA: ESSAY ON THE CAUSES AND RESULTS

Abstract

The paper introduces statistics' data sources on demographic events related to entrepreneurship in official business demography statistics and in supportive statistical projects as Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and GeoRating Project. Author discusses a list of standard OECD and Eurostat definitions for the main vital events (births and deaths) of private enterprise to analyze the data collected via these surveys, and its validity and reliability. The paper focuses at the early-stage entrepreneurship and shows advantages of adult population surveys' microdata application for the empirical research of start-ups' activity using methods of the spatial statistics. It has been suggested in this paper that sets of predictors differ for nascent entrepreneurs and new business owners; and the author used a step-by-step regression as an instrument to examine barriers and stimuli for nascent entrepreneurs (so-called start-ups) and new business owners. A database of independent variables includes 50 different quantitative leading indicators determining the regional context of the environment for early-stage entrepreneurship. When testing hypothesis, factors influencing nascent and new entrepreneurial activity in Russian regions have been compared. Using the database of spatial variables, the paper argues, one might rate effectiveness of regional policy for supporting entrepreneurship and foresee future tendencies of entrepreneurial start-up and new business owners' activity.
