PEDAGOGICAL STUDIES OF N. LANGE (BASED ON PERSONAL ARCHIVES): TO THE 160TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTHDAY OF THE SCIENTIST

Abstract

In this article author makes an attempt to reconstruct the portrait of N. Lange (1858-1921) – an eminent psychologist, philosopher, teacher and professor of the Novorossiya University as an educator and lecturer and to specify the features of his pedagogical activities and lecturer’s style. The pedagogical heritage of N. Lange is analysed on the basis of archival documents and historiographic studies. It characterizes him as a scientist who was aware of the importance of the progress of education and science and successfully put it into practice. The main directions of scientific-theoretical, pedagogical and publiceducational activities of the scientist in the late 19th and early 20th century are established. His views on the problems of the development of educational institutions of different levels, the content of education and the reform of the teaching system as a whole are represented. Materials of the personal archives of N. Lange in the Scientific Library of the Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University display the multifaceted activities and creative path of the eminent scientist, as well as the institutions and organizations he worked at. The documents from Lange archives can be considered as unique sources for studying the life and activities of N. N. Lange making it possible to estimate the impact of his research on the development of national education and science. The contribution made by the scholar to the development of historical and pedagogical science is difficult to overestimate, but it needs further study from the standpoint of the present.
