Perception of anti-vaccination movements by parents of young children

Abstract
Introduction. The realization of the immunization program remains in Poland on a high level, but a number of parents who decline vaccinations systematically increases.Aim. The aim of the study was to learn opinions and perception of anti-vaccination movements and activities among parents of young children.Material and methods. The questionnaire research was carried among 120 parents of children aged 0-36 months, waiting for a visit to a primary acre pediatrician in a period November 2012 – February 2013.Results. 96.8% of parents declared their children were vaccinated against hepatitis B and tuberculosis on the neonatal ward. 1.6% of responders rejected any vaccinations in their children, 16% of parents did not remember any details concerning vaccinations. Immunization schedule was realized without any delays by 78% of children. 79% of responders faced at least once anti-vaccination opinions regarding safety and effectiveness of vaccines. The main source of negative opinions of vaccinations was the internet (50%), friends and family members (63%). 47% of parents did not discuss their doubts and hesistancy about vaccinations with medical professionals: 27% discussed them with a pediatrician, 15% – with a general practitioner. 71.6% of parents did not change their behaviors regarding vaccination after facing the anti-vaccination activities.Conclusions. The activities of anti vaccination movements are recognized by parents but they do not influence on their decisions regarding vaccinations. As the main source of knowledge regarding vaccinations is internet, it should be strongly recommended to create professional websites dedicated to vaccinations addressed to parents and patients. Medical professionals should be more involved in the promotion of vaccinations.
