Journal Title: Research Journal Social Sciences (Online) - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 1

Abstract

Teacher training in Pakistan remained under the influence of British Education System till 1960. As a result of United States Aids Program, two schools of teachers training were instituted in collaboration with Indiana University, Indiana Bloomington, USA in 1960 in both parts of Pakistan, West Pakistan and East Pakistan (presently Bangladesh). Present practice teaching program was started in 1960. For Master level classes there use to be offered 12 credit hours for a two years master degree program. These days the credit hours have been decreased for the last 10 years. Therefore, the study was undertaken to analyse the perception of prospective teachers about the role of practice teaching on preparation of prospective teachers. It also aimed to look into the strength and weaknesses of practice teaching, which will provide guidelines for the coming years and ultimately for overall teacher training programs. Sample was taken from three departments: Elementary Education, Secondary Education and Islamic Education at Postgraduate level at the Institute of Education and Research, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. Seventy five prospective teachers (46 percent) were taken as sample using convenient sampling technique from approximately 165 female prospective teachers enrolled in the Departments. A descriptive survey was conducted. Data were analysed by calculating Mean, Standard Deviation and t-test. Despite cutting down the credit hours (time given to practice teaching) it is helpful in the development of various teaching skills. From the revealed results it reflected that there is a positive role of practice teaching on the preparation of prospective teachers in almost all professional aspects, which for sure, will enhance the confidence and overall performance of the teachers during there actual work at educational institutions at any level.
