PERCEPTION OF RELIGION IN THE DIVANS OF THE ŞEYHULISLAM POETS: THE CASE OF 18th CENTURY

Abstract
Shayhulislams were the officers who religiously represented the Ottoman authority at the highest level and served as a judicial law-maker and executer. However, many of them also were also excellent men of literature and poets. Eight of those who occupied this positon during the 18th. and 19th. centuries, either produced a complete divans or wrote booklets of divan. Ishak and Esad Efendi were two brothers who were both efficient shayhulislam and well-known poets. Odes to the Prophet Muhammed (AS) are the form of classical Ottoman Literature which involved the belief in Him and taking refuge to His spirit. In these poems, poets appeal to His soul in order to display his love and faith with no hypocricy. In this article the key issue is to study the poems in the form of Na’t in the divans of Ishak and Esad Efendi with a reference to their way of perceiving Islam as a religion.
