Percutaneous coronary intervention: Effect of a design nursing guideline on nurses' knowledge and practice

Abstract

Background: Patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) need nursing care guidelines before, during and after this procedure. Aim: Assess the effect of a design nursing guidelines on nurses' knowledge and practice for patients undergoing PCI. Subjects and Method: A quasi -experimental (pre–posttest) research design was utilized. Sample: 72 nurses who were working in the cardiology department at Assiut University-Orman Heart Hospital were included in this study. Setting: The study was carried out in the cardiology department at Assiut University-Orman Heart Hospital. Tools: Two tools were used; first was pre/post-test self-administered questionnaire sheet for nurses and second was designed nursing guidelines. Results: There were a highly significant difference between total score of nurses' performance pre and post-test (immediately and after 2 weeks) after giving nursing guidelines about PCI (P =0.001). Conclusion: The study findings revealed that level of nurses' Knowledge and practice improved after a design nursing guidelines application. Recommendation: The study recommended that adequately planned in-service training programs related to nursing guidelines for patients undergoing PCI must be established to improve nurses’ performance.
