Performance comparison of PostgreSQL and its TimescaleDB extension

Journal Title: Modern Innovations, Systems and Technologies - Year 2024, Vol 4, Issue 3

Abstract

This article considers the PostgreSQL database and its extension TimescaleDB. The purpose of this article is to compare the performance of databases when dealing with big data. Since nowadays, when developing applications, one of the first issues a developer thinks about is the choice of a database and the time to work with it, this topic remains relevant. Cloud storage was used to deploy both databases, as it has a number of advantages over deployment on a local machine, and the pgAdmin 4 user interface. To conduct the tests, a test dataset was generated, which is a time series with values of climatic indicators for 2011-2023. The article describes the structure of the test data, presents the database configuration parameters and SQL query listings. For each database the results of the execution time of the same query are presented. These results are presented in the form of histograms for each SQL query, loading and unloading of the whole dataset. After analysing them, their interpretation is presented. In conclusion, recommendations for selecting a database for specific purposes are offered.
