Performance of Biofilter for the Removal of Hydrogen Sulphide Odour
Journal Title: International Journal of Environmental Research - Year 2009, Vol 3, Issue 4
Abstract
Laboratory scale experiments were performed to evaluate the feasibility of biofilters for the removal of H[sub]2[/sub]S from wastewater treatment plant waste air. The effects of changes in air flow rate and contaminant concentration on biofilter performance treating H[sub]2[/sub]S odours were also assessed. Compost was used as media in biofilter. The study was carried out in six different phases, by increasing H[sub]2[/sub]S concentrations gradually. In the first phase only humidified air was supplied to acclimatize and develop the biofilm, within the biofilter conditions. In the second phase, inlet H[sub]2[/sub]S concentration was kept up to 10 ppm with the humidified air, H[sub]2[/sub]S removal efficiency was very high around 98%. It was concluded that the biofilter, used in the study, was more efficient (>95% removal efficiency) for low contaminant concentrations (up to 30 ppm). However, as the concentration of H[sub]2[/sub]S was increased to 50 ppm the removal efficiency decreased to 85%. The study results showed that biofilter could withstand longer starvation period and required less time to recover to its full efficiency. The effect of operating parameter such as moisture content was also assessed. The study revealed that the compost biofilter may be successfully adopted for various industrial operations where a reduction in emissions of H[sub]2[/sub]S is required.

An Environmental & Economic Analysis for Reducing Energy Subsidies
ABSTRACT: This paper estimates the trend of total energy subsidies from year 2003 (that is 16.68% of GDP) and running a model, predicts that energy subsidies will reach to 20% of GDP by 2019 if subsidies continue. Also e...
Salt Inhibition Effects on Simultaneous Heterotrophic/Autotrophic Denitrification of High Nitrate Wastewater
Denitrification of high- nitrate high- salinity wastewater is difficult due to plasmolysis and inactivation of denitrifiers at high salinity conditions. In this study, the effects of salinity and empty bed contact time (...
Distribution of Heavy Metals around the Dashkasan Au Mine
The aim of the study is to determine the major source and extent of metal pollution in the vicinity of Dashkasan gold mine. Dashkasan mine has resulted in extensive contamination of soils by Arsenic (As) and potentially...
Removal of Mercury from Aqueous Solutions by Waste Brick
Mercury is one of the most toxic heavy metals present in aquatic systems, exhibiting a complex behaviour in the environment, where it may persist for decades after the source of pollution is stopped. Hence, it is importa...
