Performance test and analysis of a photovoltaic pumping system for farmland irrigation

Journal Title: Journal of Henan Agricultural University - Year 2024, Vol 58, Issue 1

Abstract

[Objective] This study was conducted to explore the comprehensive energy demand characteristics of photovoltaic water pump systems for farmland irrigation, and improve the reliability and practicality of the system's performance. [Method] Based on high efficient water pump and inverter developed, a photovoltaic power generation water pumping system was built. Combined with the devices composition and operation characteristics of the system, the electrical performance parameters, water lifting efficiency, flow and power generation characteristics were tested and analyzed under different head operating conditions. [Results] There was good consistency between the flow and output frequency of the water pump controlled by variable frequency speed regulation within a certain solar radiation intensity range. The pump flow could reach 2 m3·h-1 during stable operation. At a pump head of 24.8 m, the maximum pumping efficiency was 12.7%, and the daily average pumping efficiency was 11.6%, and daily pumping volume was 13.1 m3. When the pump head was cut down to 14.0 m, the maximum pumping efficiency and daily average efficiency were 3.2% and 3.6% lower than the former, respectively. This indicates that reducing the pump head may not necessarily improve the system's lifting efficiency, but may affect the output flow. [Conclusion] The system configuration has a good steady-state and dynamic performance, which can meet basic agricultural production needs such as water-saving micro-irrigation and vegetation greening.
