Permeability, tortuosity, and attenuation of waves in porous materials
Journal Title: Civil and Environmental Engineering Reports - Year 2010, Vol 1, Issue 5
Abstract
The paper contains a consistent presentation of the construction of a linear poroelastic model and its applications in the theory of acoustic waves. The main purpose of this presentation is the discussion of material parameters describing the diffusion. This concerns particularly the permeability and tortuosity. In Section 2 we mention a few examples of porous systems in which diffusion processes play an important role. Section 3 contains a concise description of the two-component model describing saturated porous materials with diffusion. We point out the main features of such a system with the special emphasis of relative motion of components and changes of porosity. As a special case the governing equations of Biot’s model are presented. In Section 4 we discuss the notions of permeability, hydraulic conductivity and tortuosity. In particular the notion of the tortuosity tensor is introduced. Section 5 is the primer of the nuclear magnetic resonance method of experimental determination of permeability and tortuosity in various porous materials. Finally, Section 6 contains some issues concerning the propagation of monochromatic waves and, in particular, an influence of tortuosity on speeds and attenuation

CONCEPT AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION DURING THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE CHURCH OF BLESSED VIRGIN MARY IN CHOJNA
St. Mary's parish church in Chojna was erected at the turn of XIV and XVc. in a shape of three aisles, hall church without transept, completed from the west with a single tower and from the east with polygonal presbytery...
Composition of a plan of an architectural complex
It may be proved that the space should be composed in a certain and not other manner for specific needs and objectives so that its form was not accidental. The composition is a very important part of creation - the knowl...
PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE ALUMINIUM-TIMBER COMPOSITE BEAMS
This paper presents a new type of composite structures - aluminium-timber beams. These structures have an advantage over other existing composite structures, because they are lighter. However, their application may be li...
Seed germination of selected plants under the influence of heavy metals
In the paper has been presented the influence of selected heavy metals salts solutions: CuSO4, Pb(NO3)2, ZnCl2 and Cd(NO3)2 on the germination of seeds of the higher plants. The solutions with the various concentrations...
INTERNAL ROT DETECTION WITH THE USE OF LOW-FREQUENCY FLAW DETECTOR
The issue of rot detection in standing timber or stocked wood is very important in forest management. Rot flaw detection used for that purpose is represented by invasive and non-invasive devices. Non-invasive devices are...
