Personality traits and demographic an variables influence on quality of life in systemic sclerosis
Journal Title: Dermatologia Kliniczna - Year 2008, Vol 10, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic connective tissue disease, characterized by progressing fibrosis of the skin and internal organs, that leads to physical impairment and decreased quality of life. Objective: To answer the question, which of personality traits and demographic variables influence quality of life in patients with SSc. Material and methods: The study comprised 24 patients with systemic sclerosis (23 females, 1 male) who completed Schalock's Quality of Life Ques-tionnaire (QOL) (that enables assessment of overall quality of life, Satisfaction, Competence/Productivity, Empowerment/Independence, Social belonging/ Community integration), NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) (that enables assessment of Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, Conscien-tiousness) and questionnaire assessing demographic data. Multiple regression procedures were used in order to find the predictor of quality of life, among personal traits and demographic variables, whereas Pearson correlation was performed to measure the relation between variables. Results: Neuroticism was negatively correlated with overall quality of life (r=-0,52; p=0,03). Among demographic variables, the education (Beta=0,55; p=0,04) and professional activity (Beta=-0,6; p=0,007) were found to be the predictors of Competence/Productivity. In addition, Satisfaction, Competence/ Productivity, Empowerment/Independence were found to be predicted by Neuroticism (Beta=-0,68; p=0,01), Extraversion (Beta=-0,58; p=0,04), and Con-scientiousness (Beta=-0,58; p=0,03), respectively. Conclusions: The obtained results confirm a rational need for qualifying of SSc patients into psychological interventions, aimed to modulate personality, that could enhance motivation, coping with negative emotions and be helpful in patient’s adjustment, and improvement of quality of life.
