Abstract
For great many years, the non-alliance policy of the Kingdom of Sweden has been a continuation of the old principles of the traditional neutrality while the policy of neutrality in its practical dimension constituted a method of approaching and defining the line of foreign policy. Pragmatism has determined Sweden’s conduct and delineated the scope of flexibility of that neutrality. The evolution of the doctrine from the passive model of the 1940s and 1950s to the active policy of the 1960s was connected with the need if not necessity of adapting to the developments of the international situation, as seen by the governments of that time, and, naturally, served the purpose of providing greater security for the country. The collapse of the bipolar political system in the world brought the change of geostrategic situation of Sweden and upset the position of this state as a country conducting the policy of neutrality. Security has become a matter of universal dimension and the issue has given rise to many debates and accelerated the redefinition of the Swedish policy of neutrality. In view of the security perspective, the roles played in international relations by the European Union, the United States of America, and the United Nations Organization have been acknowledged as constitutive ones and deemed indispensable in counteracting new threats.
