Abstract

Petersburg archive of Uniate metropolitan bishops as historical archive of the Eastern Church. Historical archive of Kiev metropolitans, currently located in Petersburg, is one of the most important collections of source materials for history of Eastern Church in the territory of Poland. The archive was formed in a dispersed manner, due to absence of permanent residence for Kiev metropolitan bishops. Such residence was built only in 1746 in Radomyshl. Archival materials were collected in subsequent temporary residences of the bishops, in Vilnius, Lviv, Radomyshl, Lutsk and others. The archive documents the activity of Orthodox Kiev metropolis since 1407, and its successor – Uniate metropolis of Kiev, established in 1596. In mid-17th century the archive suffered significant losses in terms of documentation, due to conflict between the Orthodox and Uniate followers as well as war with Russia, as a result of which the seat of the metropolis – Kiev – fell outside the borders of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After the fall of the Commonwealth in 1795, archive of Kiev metropolitans was moved. In 1840s the files (mostly from Vilnius and Radomyshl) were included in the archives of the Holy Synod in Petersburg. After World War II, that church archive was incorporated into the Central State Historical Archive of St. Petersburg. Organizing the collection was done in stages, starting from end of 17th century. In 1897, first volume of metropolitan archive inventory was printed, covering 1065 documents from 1470–1700. Volume 2, covering documents from 1701–1839, was published in 1907. Current archive is of interest mostly to historians from Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. Materials preserved therein serve as the basis for historical research, as well as to auxiliary sciences of history (Ruthenian diplomacy, sigillography, historical demography, statistics) and other areas of knowledge – architecture, theology, linguistics, etc.
