PHILOSOPHICAL CLASSICAL STUDIES AS A PROBLEM IN THE CONTEXT OF HUMANITIES
Journal Title: Δόξα / Докса. Збірник наукових праць з філософії та філології - Year 2016, Vol 2, Issue
Abstract
The article represents the problem of two opposite approaches in modern philosophical classical studies. It could be described as the opposition of to communicate with classical texts instead of “archeologizing” them while “historico-philologists” claim for objectivity with analytical problematic approach. This conflict can be read in terms of «analytical – continental» opposition analyzed by Simon Critchley. According to Critchley, philosophy of “continental” type in Anglophone world gets a place among humanities and its methods cannot permeate into the strictly philosophical side. In Ukraine and Russia, philosophical classical studies are a part of humanities, but they still get a free access to “continental” approaches. Classical studies first appeared in the 19th century, thus both sides of the conflict have the same root in humanitarian knowledge of the ?poque. Therefore it is possible to apply to the problem the humanities classification by Alexander Afanasyev. He argues for dividing the whole of the humanities in two parts according to two types of rationality: on the “cold” side there are most analytical humanitarian sciences which use positivist-like methods, on the “hot” side there is a subjective-rational knowledge which cannot be fully scientific. It is impossible to locate philosophical classical studies on the “cold” side because they deal with philosophy and must consider tradition. Still the conflict might be solved by use of phenomenological type of approach in its connection to classical history philology.
