Photochemical Treatment of Methyl Red Waste Water by Photo-Fenton Reagent

Abstract

Degradation of commercial textile dye methyl red by photo-Fenton reagent has been investigated under irradiation of visible light in an aqueous medium. The Fenton reaction is a catalytic process for the generation of hydroxyl radicals from H2 O2 and is based on an electron transfer between H2 O2 and iron ions acting as homogeneous catalyst. These radicals are very strong oxidizing agent, capable of reacting with a wide variety of organic components under ambient condition. The advantage of the Fenton reagent is that no energy input is necessary to activate H2 O2 and therefore, this method offers a cost effective source of hydroxyl radicals effective in treating various industrial waste water components including a wide variety of dyes and many other substances e.g. pesticides and surfactants. In the present study for the photo bleaching process, 1× 10-3 M stock solution of methyl red dye was prepared in double distilled water as required. The degradation process was carried out by hydroxyl free radicals, which were the most reactive chemical species of the whole process. The influence of different experimental parameters such as concentration of dye (methyl red), photo catalyst (Fenton reagent), H2 O2 and pH of the experimental solution on the initial rate and photo degradation of the dye were assessed and optimized. Complete mineralization of dye methyl red (~75%) was achieved by photo-Fenton reagent. Kinetic studies reveal that the photo bleaching process follows first order kinetics. A simple, efficient and environmental friendly method for the photo degradation of dye is developed.
