PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AS A FACTOR AFFECTING PHYSICAL EFFICIENCY IN WOMEN AFTER MASTECTOMY

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 4

Abstract

Background. Physical efficiency of human body is defined as the ability to undertake long-lasting physical effort without disfunctional disturbances in its internal balance. It is influenced by coordinated functions of respiratory, nervous, motor and endocrine systems. Neoplastic disease and its treatment result in gradual deterioration of those functions. In consequence, physical efficiency is decreased, which limits functional abilities. Maintenance of high levels of physical efficiency could prevent from those unfavorable changes and alleviate adverse effects of cancer treatment. It serves as primary as well as secondary prevention. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the influence of physical activity on physical efficiency in women who undergone mastectomy.Material and methods. The study involved 96 women, aged 34-77, after modified mastectomy. The persons were divided into 3 groups; persons in groups I and II were citizens of Wrocalw, in group III - citizens of Dzierzoniow and Swidnica. Persons from group I were subjected to physical exercise program; women from group II and III were not involved in physical training. All women were examined for physical efficiency level, using mechanical treadmill, based on Bruce protocol. Additionally, their heart rate was monitored during the test using sport tester. The test was continued until submaximal heart rate was reached.Results. Average times of the test were: 9 minutes for groups I and III and 7.5 minutes - for group II. Average oxygen concumption was: 18.3 ml/kg/min - for group I; 14.2 ml/kg/min - for group II and 18.9 ml/kg/min - for group III. Average metabolic equivalent was 5.2 MET - for group I; 4.1 MET - for group II and 5.4 MET - for group III.Conclusions. There was no statistically significant difference between physical efficiency of Wroclaw citizens subjected to and not subjected to physical training. No statistically significant differences between non-exercising women from different regions were found.
