Physicochemical analysis of self-heating of glass-epoxy composites cured by novolac

Abstract

Following the interdisciplinary of the investigated phenomenon of self-heating it is necessary to analyze the processes of structural modifications occurring in composites subjected to cyclic loading both from mechanical and chemical point of view for better understanding its degradation mechanisms. The paper presents experimental research results and analysis of structural degradation of polymer composites during occurrence of self-heating effect and thermal fatigue. Some characteristic aspects of the process were analyzed and discussed, i.e. structural changes in the polymer during occurrence of the selfheating effect, its connection with dynamic mechanical properties and thermokinetic laws and behaviour of the polymer when the glasstransition temperature is reached. Particularly, the process of residual cross-linking occurred during self-heating was analyzed; the results of experimental test were presented and interpreted following the chemical reactions, which occurred and have an influence on this process.
