PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC FINGERPRINT STUDIES ON ETHANOLIC EXTRACTS OF ARNICA MONTANA L.
Journal Title: Analele Stiintifice ale Universitatii Alexandru Ioan Cuza din Iasi, Serie noua, Sectiunea II a. Biologie vegetala - Year 2016, Vol 62, Issue 2
Abstract
This study was aimed to develop the fingerprint profile of ethanolic extracts of average samples from the 3 wild population of Arnica montana L. harvested from the Romanian Eastern Carpathians. The samples were prepared using conventional extraction (to reflux and low temperature) and were quantitative and qualitative evaluated using high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) and validated quantitative determinations. HPTLC studies were carried out and phytochemical evaluation was done. The results of phytochemical evaluation and HPTLC fingerprint analysis on flowers, leaves, roots and rhizomes of A. montana showed the presence of important chemical constituents like flavonoids, polyphenols, sterols etc. The extracts obtained with ethanolic solvent (30-70 %v/v), by reflux are the richest in compounds of interest. Quantitative determinations revealed that the extracts of leaves have the highest content in flavonoids as hyperoside (from 0.4979 to 2.7558% w/w d.m.) and the extracts of roots and rhizomes have the richest content in polyphenols as caffeic acid (from 11.2410 to 15.9098% w/w d.m.). β-sitosterol and stigmasterol were clearly identified in extracts obtained with ethanol 70%v/v.
