Phytoplankton diversity and abundance in Panguil Bay, Northwestern Mindanao, Philippines in relation to some physical and chemical characteristics of the water
Journal Title: Advances in Environmental Sciences - International Journal of the Bioflux Society - Year 2012, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Phytoplankton composition diversity, abundance and their relation with the physico-chemical parameters of the waters in two coastal sites in Panguil Bay, Philippines were compared. A total of 93 species belonging to four major groups (diatoms, dinoflagellates, silicoflagellates and cyanobacteria) were identified, with the diatoms being the chief component of the phytoplankton. Using several diversity indices, results showed minimal differences in the phytoplankton species between the two sites. The results of NPMANOVA revealed significant differences (p<0.05) in phytoplankton relative abundancebetween sites and within sites between months. These differences were attributed to variations in the physico-chemical characteristics of the water as reflected from the results of Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). Since results of the study reflect the importance of physical and chemical factors of the water on the phytoplankton community structure in Panguil Bay, it is suggested that changes in these factors, may it be due to natural or anthropogenic sources, may lead to impacts or changes in phytoplankton dynamics.

Using maximum entropy to predict the distribution of a critically endangered reptile species (Eryx jaculus, Reptilia: Boidae) at its Northern range limit
The sand boa (Eryx jaculus) is one of the least known and rarest reptile species in Europe. In Romania, the sand boa is the rarest reptile species with only four locality records being known; at Cernavodă, Cărpini...
Structural research in the natural beech forest, situated at the eastern limit (Humosu Old Growth Beech Forest, Iași county, Romania).
The paper points out the stability of the natural forest due to its structural complexity, reached through milennia of evolution. The „Humosu Old Growth Beech Forest” situated between 450-500m altitude in the Moldavian P...
