Place and Collective Memory: Sivas Massacre and Madımak Hotel

Abstract

Remembering is a process which involves places and objects. The importance of place for remembering becomes evident especially on traumatic cases. In this regard, this article examines the relationship between place and collective memory based on the experiences of individuals who lost their family members in Sivas Massacre at Madımak Hotel. To that end, in-depth interviews with ten people were conducted and commemoration on the anniversary of the massacre in front of the Madımak Hotel were participatively observed. First of all, the relationship of the whole group with the place (Madımak Hotel) was analysed through these interviews and observations. Then, different memory frames among the group was evaluated in the context of the relationship with Madımak hotel as a trauma site.
