Planning in a turbulent environment

Abstract

This paper discusses changes in management (including the planning function) that result from a growing unpredictability of the environment. Based on new theoretical suggestions concerning strategic processes as well as the results of empirical studies, planning is argued to maintain an important management function also in a turbulent environment. However, planning methods that increase the flexibility of a company are recommended (i.e. scenario planning and Gordon analogies). Moreover, future research directions in the field of planning, perceived as the organizational learning process, are suggested.
