Plant macrofossils from Czyżów Complex deposits of the Szczerców outcrop, central Poland
Journal Title: Geology, Geophysics & Environment - Year 2016, Vol 42, Issue 3
Abstract
The paper presents the results of research into the plant macrofossils found in the tectonic Kleszczów Graben, within Mesopleistocene sandy sediments. A number of samples were collected at eight locations from river sediments containing variously sized fragments of plants, mostly from greenish sands overlying Neogene sediments. The structural characteristics of the sediments show a cyclic record of the formation of point bars, their washing out at supercritical conditions, and their aggradation by fine-grained material during flow waning. Based on lithological and structural studies, it has been demonstrated that the sands accumulated in an environment of a meandering river, whose valley bottom was covered with fairly dense vegetation, inhibiting the influx of mineral material to the floodplain from the surroundings – thevalley or glacial plateau slopes. The aim of further analysis was to identify the plant genera of the individual macrofossils (about 40 specimens). The most numerous macrofossils were observed in the middle layers of the profile, within sandy megaripple structures, where mostly fragments of Fraxinus and Acer wood were present. In other layers, several fragments of Pinus and three pieces of Populus wood were identified. Additionally, young stems of dicotyledonous plants and fragments of rhytidome (the outer bark of a tree) were found. The results are discussed in combination with considerations on the deposition of the Czyżów Complex in the Bełchatów outcrop, and on the occurrence of local flora.

Fracture network modelling for shale rocks – a case study from the Baltic Basin
The discrete fracture network (DFN) approach offers many key advantages over conventional dual porosity approaches when the geometry and properties of discrete fractures play a significant role in geomechanics, and resou...
Adsorption efficiency of selected natural and synthetic sorbents
Sorbents are substances binding other substances on their surface. Effective sorbents have a porous surface. The adsorption activity of the surface is closely related to the local radius of curvature of surface irregular...
Paramagnetic properties of Cuban red mud at low temperatures
The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of Cuban red mud have been measured at three different temperatures: 295 K, 150 K and 77 K. The broad absorption line with resonance fields ∼(1.7–1.8) kOe was observed at all tem...
Compositional differences between Besko and Otryt sandstones of the Krosno Beds (Oligocene) in Eastern part of the Silesian Tectonic Unit
The aim of this research was to quantitatively and qualitatively analyse under microscope sandstones representing two lithofacies called Otryt and Besko (or Lesko) facies of the Krosno Formation (Oligocene), Silesian Tec...
Rynek pojemności magazynowych na ropę naftową i paliwa ciekłe w Polsce - perspektywy rozwoju
The year 2012 was the first year in the past 12 years when the demand for liquid fuels dropped. That resulted in a decrease of demand for mandatory reserve storage capacity. A rapid growth of the demand for crude oil and...
