Pneumocephalus after lumbar epidural

Journal Title: Medical Journal Armed Forces - Year 2018, Vol 74, Issue 4

Abstract

Epidural techniques are widely used for anaesthesia and pain management. Various complications have been reported after lumbar puncture. Rarely after an epidural block, pneumocephalus may also occur.1 There are numerous causes of pneumocephalus. However, following epidural block it is usually as a result of dural puncture during the application of the loss of resistance technique using air. It is customary, while assessing the position of the tip of the epidural needle, to enter the tissues under the skin using an air/saline filled syringe attached to the needle.
