Journal Title: Zeszyty Naukowe Akademii Sztuki Wojennej - Year 2009, Vol 2009, Issue 2
Abstract
In the contemporary world, the success of an organization is determined by many factors including production and marketing strategy, flexibility of organizational structures, speed of information flow, high competence of managerial staff, financial wealth. Undoubtedly, they are important success factors but not the only ones. Also “the spirit of an organization” is crucial. It is understood as a set of specific characteristics which is demonstrated by organizational culture. In the literature on the subject there is not a single binding definition of organizational culture. One of them defines this culture as a set of basic and shared by the members of the organization assumptions. Examining these assumptions which make up the most difficult to perceive cultural level has become, apart from presenting orderly knowledge of organizational culture, the aim of this article. As the research on randomly chosen Polish companies showed, the mostly accepted assumptions of organizational culture is the employees’ competence and sharing knowledge, as well as sharing the participation and responsibility, what may mean that increasing individual qualifications and management based on knowledge corresponds with appreciating the individual’s potential, including its autonomy, independence, activeness and reliability. However, it must be remembered that the translation of the accepted culture assumptions into employees particular behavior is possible only if managers not only make declarations but also implement them in the organization’s life.
