Polish Attitudes toward Other Nations, Ethnic Minorities and Refugees
Journal Title: Chorzowskie Studia Polityczne - Year 2015, Vol 10, Issue
Abstract
The paper portrays Polish people’s attitudes toward national minorities, refugees, other nations and ethnic groups, focusing primarily on intolerant or xenophobic opinions and behaviors. Relatively common and increasingly blatant in recent years, they clearly challenge some of the intrinsic values and principles of liberal democracy, threatening to undermine its foundations. Although aggression, including hate speech, is directed predominantly toward Muslims, Gypsies, and Jews, more and more Poles seem to have developed a revulsion against most other nations, notably refugees. The author points to the likely drivers for this growing trend, with special emphasis on politicians’ enunciations that create a favorable climate for the rise of such attitudes and behaviors in the society at large.
