«Polish question» in Russia’s public space of the nineteenth century

Abstract

The article analyzes the Russian imperial strategy of using public space to legitimize the government’s policy at the «Polish question» during the nineteenth century. The author researched public opinion’s technologies, value-defined ideological and practical mechanisms of establishment’s interaction with the Russian public in the destruction of Polish influences at western regions of the Empire, including the Right-Bank Ukraine. The author concludes that this interaction contributed to the formation of a new national-imperial ideology, based on the recognition of the indivisibility and the historicity of the of Russian state’s borders. The government has appealing to public’s patriotic feelings in case of strengthening of Polish national cultural and social movement. The Russia’s administration applies at first time a strategy of using public communication as a means of shaping public opinion and therefore tolerance mechanism of government policy in the «Polish question». Resorting to the technology of transformation the Poles into internal enemies of the Motherland and updating the patriotic sentiments of the public, St. Petersburg formed a favorable environment for the implementation of government programs of definitive integration of the western regions into imperial space and destroy the remnants of the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Poland after suppression of Insurrection of 1863-1864. As a result of this policy social movement aimed at preserving the national and socio-cultural identity of the Poles in the Russian Empire, was outside the legal public activity that adversely affected the Polish nation-building processes of the modern era
