Political State of Korea 1897-1910 and Daehan Empire

Abstract

After the China-Japan war in 1897 with the end of China’s defeat, China started to lose its power. However, Japan emerged as another major power in the region after the Meiji Era. Korea moved away from long-term sovereignty of China although this did not bring it a real independency. Contrary, as she got further away from the deep-rooted system of China, Korea got closer with Russia in order to stay away from Japan which at that time had been expanding in East Asia gradually. This study analyzes the latest period of Choson founded in 1399 but towards the end of 19th century failed to follow the new system in the region. After the collapse of Choson, Great Korean Empire (Daehan) took effect between 1897-1910 on Korean Peninsula. It is also aimed to evaluate the process that took Korea to the proclamation of the Empire. Through this evaluation, a general viewpoint of the region is drawn on the basis of Korean Peninsula. Thus, it is aimed to shed light on the historical period on which modern Korea lay the foundations.
