Abstract

The topic of Belarusian troops, especially in the context of Lithuania’s policy towards Belarus, conducted in conditions of the Lithuanian-Polish conflict, was moved during author’s research on the trial of the Vilnius region location in the Polish defence system in the years 1918-1926. The Belarusian troops in Lithuania are the part of armed forces which aim was to fight for Belarusian independence. Lithuanian support for Belarusians was only a resultant of Lithuanian-Polish relations. Lithuania agreed twice to partly acceptance of Belarusian aspirations. In autumn 1918, it was the result of the announcement of Polish independence and the second time was the result of Vilnius occupancy by general Żeligowski. In both cases propagandist aspect of the issue was the most important for Lithuanians, but it should be noted that the Belarusian troops had also serious military value for creating Lithuanian army, especially at the very beginning. Moreover, possible support of Lithuania by Belarusians in case of an armed conflict with Poland through an outbreak of the uprising on the Belarusian territory of Polish country could have a serious meaning. Lithuania stopped be interested in supporting of Belarusian action when the Polish-Lithuanian border was internationally accepted in 1923, which caused the dissolution of the last Belarusian troop in the same year. A major role was played by the Polish efforts, leading to that the Lithuanian-Belarusian cooperation, directed against Poland, was paralysed.
