Abstract
Increasingly, German contemporary literature has become cross-cultural. This can be attributed to a growing number of authors, not of the German culture, who live in Germany, and write and publish in the German language. Artur Becker is one such author. Back in the 1980s, Becker left his native country, Poland, and moved to Germany. His emigration seems to be only topographic in nature. Although he writes in German, his novels are clearly influenced by Polish literature, culture and history. Thus, German readers are clearly challenged. In order to understand the deeper symbolic meaning of the novel, which is usually far more complex than the thematic one, the reader is forced into knowledge of Polish literature and history. This phenomenon can be referred to as Hybrid Literature. Such literature is written in a language of one country, but is influenced, without explanation, by another. One example of Hybrid Literature is Becker’s novel, "Das Herz von Chopin" (2006). Using the Third Space Theory by Homi K. Bhabha, the essay analyzes problems that occur in both the reception and understanding of the work’s symbolism.
