ПОЛЬСКИЕ КОНФЕДЕРАТЫ В ЗАПАДНОЙ СИБИРИ

Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2014, Vol 13, Issue 51

Abstract

The authors deal with the subject of the deportation of Bar Confederates to Siberia. This was a sudden dash by the Polish nobility to defend the Rzeczpospolita against Russian expansion in the years 1768-1772. In 1772, this expansion led to the First Partition of Poland. Historiography regards the issue of the Confederation as the first fight for an independent Poland, which on the one hand was still free, but in reality was subjugated by Russia – a mere province of the latter. The deportation of Confederates is regarded as the first mass and forced exile of citizens of the Rzeczpospolita into the heart of the Russian Empire. It was also considered the first political deportation of Poles, as a result of which the “Siberian myth” was born; which would play such a significant role in the development of the Polish national identity.
