POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME AND THYROID DYSFUNCTION

Journal Title: International scientific journal Science and Innovation - Year 2025, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

The most prevalent endocrine and metabolic condition affecting women of childbearing age is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which can have a serious negative impact on the physical and mental well-being of fertile women by causing metabolic abnormalities, infertility, elevated anxiety, and depression. The etiology and pathogenesis of PCOS are unknown, making it a clinically very diverse illness that makes treatment more difficult. The thyroid gland generates hormones that affect nearly every cell in the human body and has intricate regulatory effects on metabolism, reproduction, and emotions. PCOS shares clinical symptoms with certain thyroid conditions. Furthermore, certain thyroid conditions, like subclinical hypothyroidism (SHPT), worsen related metabolic and reproductive issues in addition to raising the prevalence of PCOS.It's interesting to note that PCOS raises the prevalence of some thyroid conditions. The thyroid gland's involvement in PCOS is yet unknown, though. In order to examine the thyroid gland's crucial role in PCOS, this review will summarize the comorbidity of PCOS and thyroid disease, as well as their joint roles in metabolic disorders, related metabolic diseases, and reproductive disorders. Additionally, it will analyze the possible mechanisms through which the thyroid gland influences the onset, progression, and symptoms of PCOS.
