POROSITY OF SELECTED MESOZOIC CARBONATE ROCKS OF THE NORTHERN EDGE OF THE HOLY CROSS MOUNTAINS

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2011, Vol 445, Issue 445

Abstract

The paper presents the results of an investigation of the porosity of eight carbonate rock facies. The studied rocks come from the northern Mesozoic edge of the Holy Cross Mountains (Góry Świętokrzyskie) in Central Poland. Two types of Upper Cretaceous rock (Turonian) were investigated – Pętkowice opoka and Janików limestone – and six facies of Upper Jurassic rock (Kimmeridgian and Oxfordian): Bałtów Coral Limestone, Skarbka Oolite Limestone, Przepaść Massive Limestone, Wierzbica Oolite Limestone, Wierzbica Oyster Lumachelle, Bałtów Platy Limestone. The paper discusses in detail the results of open porosity and total porosity studies as well as porosity distribution plots. Research has shown that the most porous of the investigated rocks are both Upper Cretaceous facies. Both oolite limestones (Skarbka and Wierzbica) are also characterized by high porosity. The least porous of the examined facies were Wierzbica Oyster Lumachelle and Bałtów Coral Limestone.
