Portable wooden buildings at the turn of the 20th century – a historical review of structural solutions

Abstract

Portable wooden buildings at the turn of the 20th century – a historical review of structural solutions. The evolving warfare at the end of 19th century gave birth to a new type of building – a portable barrack. This solution found many applications as field hospitals, provisional shelters, summer houses, warehouses, horse stables, or prisoner camps. Various suppliers offering these structures were following a similar concept: they were to be more comfortable and hygienic than a tent, cheap in manufacturing, easy to assemble, and convenient in transportation. During World War II, Germany designed modular systems for portable barracks that enabled easy adaptation to various purposes, their manufacturing was later standardised to ensure compatibility of parts coming from various suppliers.
