POSSIBILITIES TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF REGIONAL PLANNING

Abstract
Sustainable development is a concept built on the basis of sustainable forms of development providing a higher level of functioning to the system. This process is not separated from the dynamics of reasonable consumption. Sustainable development is an objective necessity of the future, however, efficient actions for its realization should be undertaken already now. The understanding of sustainable development as a philosophy of the rationalized and reasonable combination between the rational and the emotional is increasingly established in both theory and practice. Regional plan- ning is related to finding an optimal compromise in the views for the development of the economic, social and environmental fields, and involving those views with measures for their implementation in the interest of today’s and future generations. The active engagement of the local and regional authorities and the local community is a key factor for achieving sustainable development on a city, regional and national level.
