POSTMODERNISM: THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE CONCEPT

Abstract

This article is devoted to the analysis and the systematization of the concept “postmodernism” both by the foreigh and by the native scientists. The peculiar signs and elements, that are realized on a genre-style level, are distinguished. Postmodernism can be described as a special style of thinking in the second half of the 20th century. As a phenomenon that is in the process of formation, it lends with difficulty itself to the systematic analysis and the typological generalization. The difficulty consists in its distinctive features since the postmodernism finds the expression in philosophy, art, criticism, literature, architecture, history and culture. The postmodernism blurs the boundaries between high and low forms of art, embodying everything in a playful form and reducing the elite to the masses, denying tough genre differences, using an unusual blending of old and new forms, combining themes and genres that were previously considered unfit for literature. Postmodern writers, with the help of self-parading and metafiction, cast doubt on the authority of the author, create new narrative techniques of writing. Postmodern authors try to combine elements of different works, different genres, trends, they create a unique story based on the collage and the montage. This explains the presence of elements of several genre forms in modern novels. The article highlights the ways of organizing the text in a postmodern novel: intertextuality, pastiche, parody, irony, that causes the appearance of the metafiction.
