Potential relationship between immune system cells expressing KIR receptors and pathogenesis of periodontitis

Abstract
Aim of the study: To present current knowledge of the immune system cells that demonstrate expression ability of the receptors from KIR family, and are potentially involved in pathogenesis of periodontitis.Discussion: Beside bacterial biofilm,genetic,environmental and behavioural factors play a significant role in the etiopathogenesis of periodontitis. Increasingly, more significance is being attributed to the immune response of the host to the neutrophil granulocyte, macrophages, fibroblasts,lymphocytes:T,B and NK cells.Conclusion: The investigation of molecular and cellular mechanisms has made it possible to identify the specific genes associated with enhanced susceptibility to periodontitis. A more thorough study of immune effector mechanisms will contribute to the better understanding of periodontitis etiopathogenesis, and may result in the introduction of new, more effective methods of treatment.
