PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS TEACHING PROFESSION IN THE SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS AT BALIKESIR UNIVERSITY

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards teaching profession with regard to several variables. The sample in this study consisted of 242 pre-service teachers who were al ready attending in the department of physical educationand sports in the School of Physical Educationand Sports at Balıkesir University. Personal Information Form and Attitudes towards Teaching Profession Scale which was developed by Üstüner (2006) were used for data collection instruments. The SPSS soft ware package was used to analyze the data. Arithmetic mean, frequency distribution, t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) andTukey HSD test were conducted as the statistical method. The findings of the study revealed that the pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards teaching profession were at the level of ‘I agree’ in general. A significant difference was found between the attitude scores of male and female pre-service teachers in favor of the male swith regard togender variable. Moreover, a significant difference was observed in the attitude swith regard to grade variable. It was found that the average scores of freshmen were lower than the average scores of second grades, third grades and seniors. Pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards teaching profession in upper grades were higher thant hose in lower grades.
