Predicting Addiction Tendency and Emotional Divorce Based on Religious Beliefs among Parents of Elementary School Children in Firoozabad

Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 5

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to predict addiction tendency and emotional divorce based on religious beliefs among parents of the elementary school children in Firoozabad. To this end, a descriptive-correlational research method was employed. The research population included all parents of elementary school students in Firoozabad amounting to 1230 persons. Using multistage cluster sampling and Krejci and Morgan table, 300 persons (150 males and 150 females) were selected as the respondents in the research sample and they were assessed through administering three questionnaires (religious beliefs, addiction tendency, and emotional divorce). The results showed that religious beliefs are able to predict 38% of variances in parents’ addiction tendency, and the components such as “relationship with God, with others, with oneself” had a significant role in this regard (p = 0.001), but the component “relationship with the world of creation” did not have a significant role in this prediction. In addition, the components of religious beliefs in total predicted 33% of the variances in emotional divorce in parents, with the components of “relationship with oneself, with others, with God” playing a significant role (p = 0.001). On the other hand, the component “relationship with the world of creation” did not play a significant role in this prediction. In addition, the male and female parents showed differences in the components of “relationship with God” and “relationship with themselves”, the former in favor of the females and the latter in favor of the males. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the component “relationship with the world of creation”. It was also noted that the male and female parents differed in terms of addiction tendency, with higher scores gained by the males. Finally, it became clear that the male and female parents differed in terms of emotional divorce, feeling impatient for the “need for a companion” component, with higher scores for the males in the components of “separation from one another” and "feeling impatient” and higher score for the females in terms of the component of “feeling lonely”.
