Preliminary results of Scheuermann’s hyperkyphosis treatment with a brace
Journal Title: Rehabilitacja Medyczna - Year 2014, Vol 18, Issue 4
Abstract
Aim of the study: The aim of the study was an evaluation of the preliminary results of Scheuermann’s hyperkyphosis treatment with a brace. In-brace correction achieved with a brace treatment for hyperkyphosis was analysed.Material and Methods: The study group consisted of 21 children (19 boys and 2 girls) with an average age of 14.5±5.34 years (12-18 years), treated with brace because of Scheuermann’s kyphosis at the Rehabilitation Ward for Children in Sopot (Poland). Inclusion criteria for brace treatment included Stagnara angle (Cobb angle TH4-TH12) 50° or more and Risser<4. In-brace correction on X-ray in lateral, standing projection using the Stagnara method was measured and compared to the initial angle before brace treatment. Results: The average Stagnara angle without a brace was 62.5° and with a brace was 48.2°. Analysis of X-ray of in-brace correction revealed that all except one patient had significant kyphosis correction in a brace. The average Stagnara angle of the kyphosis decreased by 23%.Conclusion: A rigid extensional brace for the treatment of thoracic hyperkyphosis provides a significant, very good initial in-brace correction of deformation. The percentage of initial hyperkyphosis of in-brace correction is similar in children aged 12-14 years and 15-18 years, with a slightly better correction in younger children. The percentage of initial hyperkyphosis of in-brace correction does not depend on the initial Stagnara angle on the start time of the brace treatment. A follow-up study seems desirable before a final conclusion for brace effectiveness can be drawn.
