Preparation and defense of dissertations in human geography in Ukraine (historical and scientific analysis)

Abstract

The topicality of historical and scientific research in human geography can be defined by means of scientific methodological principles as the goal to overview all dissertations in specific historical terms has never been set before. The importance of this research in human geography can’t be denied since it correlates not only with the analysis of science in the past, but the definition of the development perspectives as well. The internal patterns and needs of human geography as well as the social needs to improve the status and efficiency of modern human-geographical research require studies of scientific schools in geography that can be fulfilled through the analysis of dissertations. The article analyzes historical and scientific process of creating the dissertation preparing system in human geography in Ukraine. The systemic changes in training experts in human geography have been shown in chronological order from the late XIX to early XXI centuries. The particular attention has been devoted to the dynamics of dissertations and their topics that were characteristic for different periods. The list of candidates of PhD and doctoral degrees and the time of their defense have been first made. Based on the analysis of the number of dissertations defended, the author shows the position of human geography in the scientific potential of Ukraine. The outcomes include detailed information about the ways of preparing dissertations, their themes and the impact they have on the formation of Ukrainian scientific schools in human geography. Special attention has been paid to the issues of functioning of the specialty “economic and human geography” in the process of the higher education system reforming.
