Journal Title: IJAR-Indian Journal of Applied Research - Year 2016, Vol 6, Issue 9

Abstract

AIDS prevention largely depends on health education and behavioural changes based on AIDS awareness. Ignorance of the disease and of the mode of transmission of the virus can generate fear and prejudice against those who are infected and those who are providing care to the patients living with HIV/AIDS including Children. There is a need to facilitate the initiation and the strengthening of home based care in HIV/AIDS and to empower the community preparedness against the disease. Objectiveis to identify the leadership structure in the families and community to assess the preparedness of the community for rendering care when the need arises particularly for Children. This study was a cross sectional study design, conducted in the coverage limits of primary health centre, Venkatachalam, Nellore Taluk, Nellore District, among 1332 samples. It was concluded that only 30% of the study population knew that HIV is a virus. In the study population, only 44% knew that there is no complete cure for HIV/AIDS. It was observed from the focus group discussion that the groups were aware regarding the basic modes of transmission but still many misconceptions with regard to modes of transmission was still prevailing among HIV/AIDS infected children in both affected and effected.
